Sandpoint, Idaho is a famous as the railroad funnel. The reason why it is called funnel is because Sandpoint is a junction of two inter continental railways and two local (short distance) railroad. Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) comes up across the long bridge on Lake Pend Oreille and goes through the base on Boyer then toward northen edge (Bonners Ferry). On the other hand, Union Pacific (UP) comes from the edge lake of Pend Oreille and meet with Pend Oreille Valley Railroad (POVA) at Dover. In the downtown, Sandpoint, both two major line overcross and go up along with U.S. Highway #2 toward north. While, POVA goes west along with Pend Oreille River and turns north at Newport, Washington toward the Pend Oreille Valley. Montana Rail Link is using BNSF line from Spokane to Sandpoint, then branched at Sandpoint and goes east along Lake Pend Oreille shore and goes into Montana. Sandpoint is only the city where Amtrak stopps. Even it is midnight, it indicates Sandpoint is the town of railroad and long bridge across the lake is one of the symbolic icon of this small city.
