A Small Travelogue, 1996
Arrival
The trip to San Francisco was consequent business trip from New York City. After about 5-hour-flight from New Ark Airport operated by Continental Airlines, we arrived at San Francisco International Airport around noon time. To fly over Rocky Mts. and wide American continent was really impressive. We soon got on the chartered bus and moved to Fisherman's Wharf and enjoyed sea food lunch at Neptune Palace in Pier 39. It was Sunday so this famous sight seeing spot was so clouded but the reserved restaurant was so confortable to have a time to enjoy foods with watching San Francisco Bay.
Bus Tour
In the afternoon, we enjoyed bus tour around San Francisco. We went to Golden Gate Bridge first and I recognized that the bridge was for toll road, national highway 101. Fortunately, the weather was a bit fine so we could see the opposite side of the bay. The tour bus went up to the top of Twin Peaks and we could see the beatiful city view from the hill. The bus finally went to the duty free shop and finished that short trip in San Francisco.
ANA Hotel
Our hotel was ANA Hotel San Francisco, 50 third street. The hotel was really confortable and the view from the window was so nice. It was not so much oriented for "Japanese" style though the hotel was operated by Japanese Airline company. At the buffet breakfast, it was so lucky to have both American and Japanese style because this was 2nd week in the United States and I was a bit tired with American style meal.
Business Trip
06/17/1996 : Apple Computer
06/17/1996 : Silicon Graphics
06/18/1996 : Netscape Communications
06/18/1996 : Mikuni Berkley R&D
06/19/1996 : Sun Microsystems
We could visit major IT companies in Silicon Valley, I was later recognized that my current comany's office in America is very close to Apple Computer (Cupertino City) and ex-company was close to Netscape. At that time, Netscape was the most valuable opportunity to visit and listen to their presentation that told us how they would be a leader in IT infrastructural industry. Unfortunately, Netscape is no longer a independent company but this given great opportunity impacted me so much and it seems to me this experience influent my later career path.

Shopping
On the last day in this city, I could have a half-day free time so I decided to enjoy shopping. Of course I chose around Union Square first. Surrounding this 1 block area, a lot of brand shops and department stores, so it will take more than 2 hours to watch all stores. Unluckly, I didn't bring enough money to buy a kind of brand goods nor interested in those items, I only looked around those stores and moved to the another block to buy a kind of typical souvenior items, such as chocolates in the Cable Car and so on.
Cable Car Ride
After the shopping, I walked back to the Market St. - Powell St, where the turn table is on the street. The men called "Gripmen" push and pull the car by their hand and turn the car. I chose Powell - Hyde line and got on the car and paid 2 $ for the one way ride. The speed was slow and so people can get into the car at any time. The cable car went over the hills and China Town and finally got to Fisherman's Wharf. I tried to spend some time in this area but I saw that so many people were waiting for the returning car, so I gave up and went back to the hotel.
