New York Entertainment - Jazz, Live

There are a lot of bars and clubs which offer the live play of Jazz especially in the downtown area. There are two categories among those clubs, the one is with table seats and the other not. If you try to enjoy the formar, it's better to reserve in advance. The charging style should be slightly different among clubs, you should better check the web site or other information beforehand.

Apollo Theater
During the 2000-2001 period, the Apollo Theater Foundation developed a vision to restore the Apollo's position as a leading performing arts venue and to firmly establish the Apollo as a community-centered institution. The Apollo has made a dramatic resurgence over the last year and a half with the addition of a new executive management team; a rejuvenated Board of Directors, including several top entertainment, business and civic leaders like AOL/Time Warner CEO, Richard Parsons; music guru, Quincy Jones and Atlantic music mogul, Val Azzoli. In addition, several other high profile changes have occured, such as the opening of a major new Broadway style musical, Harlem Song, directed by Tony Award winner, George C. Wolfe; the regular headlining of major shows, and benefits with artists such as Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, Salma Hayek, Wynton Marsalis, Rosie Perez, The Strokes and David Byrne among others.

 New York and Jazz History

Jazz was born on the end of 19th century in New Orleans, Louisiana where had been taking an important role as the portal city for a long time so that the multi races and cultures had been mixtured. The African rythm and the European traditional music had mixtured then born the new category of music, it's "JAZZ".

After the movement of Lois Armstrong to Chicago, the base of jazz also moved here in 1920th. The musical "Chicago" is presenting this ara. In this ara, "White Jazz" had born and the base of "Black Jazz" started to move to Harlem, New York.

In 1940th, the mecca of Jazz moved from Harlem to Midtown. It was the ara for Charley Parker and other groups who had been based around 52nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. From those groups, "Be Bop" was born.

The mecca of Jazz then moved to the Village, where the authentic jazz club such as Village Vanguard. Recently, still most of the jazz clubs are in this area. Fusion or Post Modern Jazz and such types of new categories had born and still jazz is under evolving.

Blue Note
Everybody can easily imagine the name, "Blue Note" as the most famous jazz club in New York City. Blue Note is located on the 3rd Street, just east from the Avenue of Americas (6th Avenue), you can easily find the club because it is "piano formed" entrance. The play will usually start at 8:00pm. The band will play here for one week then next band comes.

Birdland
Birdland, the name is originated from the nick name of Charly Parker, is located in the Theater District on the 44th Street, Midtown. Its stage is very close to the seats so that you can enjoy the play with the players.

Village Vanguard
Located in Greenwich Villade on the 11th Street at 7th Avenue, Village Vanguard is the famous and old jazz club opened in 1935 which is well known as that Mile Davis used to play at this club.

Arthur's Tavern
Arthur's Tavern is featuring 1940 and 1950's New Orleans Jazz, located on the 7th Avenue in Greenwich Village. The tables are located surrounging the piano and it offers rather easy and relaxed atmosphere.
